In South Africa, a tragic accident resulted in the death of 45 individuals when a bus carrying them fell approximately 50 meters off a bridge into a ravine in the Limpopo province, according to official reports.
The sole survivor of the catastrophe, an eight-year-old girl, was hospitalized with severe injuries following the crash. The bus, which was transporting pilgrims from Gaborone, Botswana, to an Easter service in Moria, veered off the road and through a barrier on the Mmamatlakala mountain pass, eventually igniting upon impact.
Rescue efforts extended into the evening on Thursday, with emergency services facing challenges in accessing the victims amidst the wreckage.
Transport Minister Sindisiwe Chikunga visited the accident site, offering her deepest sympathies to the families of the deceased and promising government support in repatriating the bodies and conducting a thorough investigation into the accident’s cause. She emphasized the importance of vigilant and safe driving, especially during the busy Easter weekend.
This incident highlights South Africa’s ongoing challenges with road safety. Earlier that day, President Cyril Ramaphosa had issued an Easter message calling on citizens to prioritize safety and reduce the likelihood of road-related tragedies.
