Following a shooting in the community of Bourget, to the east of Ottawa, one member of the Ontario Provincial Police is dead and two others are hurt.
Early on Thursday morning, a shooting took place in a little town in the Clarence-Rockland municipality.
Officers were summoned to a disturbance at a home on Laval Street at 2 a.m., according to the OPP, where someone claimed to have heard a gunshot.
When three police arrived on the scene, someone inside the house opened fire on all three, according to OPP. They were sent to an Ottawa hospital.
The others are at the Ottawa Hospital, and one of them has since passed away. Outside the Ottawa Hospital Civic Campus, where one of the hurt policemen was taken for treatment, there are a number of OPP cruisers parked.
One person has been detained, according to OPP, and there is no danger to the public’s safety.
The deceased officer was identified as Sgt. Eric Mueller by OPP Commissioner Thomas Carrique.
Carrique posted on Twitter, “I regretfully advise that OPP Sgt Eric Mueller has been killed in the line of duty. It is with an extremely heavy heart,” “We are awaiting more information regarding his fellow cops who are still in the hospital. We are praying for the cops, their families, and their coworkers.
At 1:30 PM, OPP will give an update on the investigation. The media conference will be live streamed on CTVNewsOttawa.ca.
Just before noon, a vehicle transporting Mueller’s body was escorted by more than a dozen Ottawa police and OPP cars from the Ottawa Hospital Civic Campus to the Ottawa Hospital General Campus. The General Campus is home to the coroner’s office.
At Rockland City Hall, the flags are lowered to half-staff.
Laval Street is still blocked off by OPP officers in the vicinity of the shooting scene, and it is still restricted to traffic. In Bourget, there is a substantial police presence, with Ottawa police assisting the OPP operation.
The 1,200 inhabitants of the town were startled to see police cars cruising the streets.
Veronique Poirier Larabie observed that it was not at all simple to awaken to this situation.
“To be really honest, that makes me want to cry right now. I don’t anticipate this to happen out here, especially if it’s right down the street from me because everyone seems to be so friendly.
Madison Bach, a resident of Bourget who lives across the street from the home where the shooting took place, claimed that her husband heard something at 2:15 a.m. but decided it might have been the family dog and went back to bed. They discovered the shooting took place right outside their front door this morning.
Regarding the gunshot in the neighbourhood, Bach told reporters, “It’s really terrifying.” “There are several schools here, and it’s extremely safe and calm. You have to reassess your priorities when something like this occurs near to you that you didn’t think could.
Bach claimed that she hadn’t spoken to any residents of the home where the shooting took place.
“We’re only afraid,”
About 50 km east of Ottawa’s city centre is Bourget.
Clarence-Rockland The tragic shooting in Bourget, according to Mayor Mario Zanth, “saddened and dismayed” him.
“Words cannot adequately explain the suffering that the citizens of the City of Clarence-Rockland are currently experiencing. In a statement, Zanth expressed his sympathy to the family and other cops.
“Two officers were hurt during this incident, and they are being treated in a hospital. We express our sincere condolences to their families and wish them a good and quick recovery.
Doug Ford, the premier, claims that Sgt Mueller was “senselessly killed in the line of duty.”
Ford wrote on Twitter, “My prayers are with his family and friends. As we wait for updates on the health of his fellow officers, kindly join me in praying for them. God bless our military heroes.
Members of Congress express their condolences.
In a statement posted to Twitter, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau referred to the OPP officer’s shooting death as “awful news.”
“I’m keeping the two injured officers in my thoughts and sending my sincere condolences to the family, friends, and coworkers of OPP Sergeant Eric Mueller, who was killed in the line of duty.”
The prime minister said the federal government is looking for methods to keep police officers safe while telling reporters at Rideau Hall that the deaths of officers in the line of duty “has to stop.”
“We have lost police officers in the line of duty, serving our community, far too frequently over the past many months across this country,” Trudeau said.
“This has to end, and I’ve been working with the ministers of public safety and justice to see what else we can do to keep them secure. We must stand guard over those who risk their lives every day to keep the rest of us safe. That is something we still investigate.
Pierre Poilievre, leader of the Conservative Party of Canada, posted on Twitter, “We mourn with the family of the OPP officer killed in the line of duty early this morning, and pray for the other two officers who were shot and are currently in hospital.”
“The majority of us will never understand the risk that police officers incur every day when they leave their families and report for duty. Never should we take for granted the sacrifice they made.
Jagmeet Singh, the leader of the NDP, expressed his sympathy to Mueller’s family and described it as “tragic news” that “another police officer has been shot and killed.”
Singh posted on Twitter, “I extend deep sympathy to the family, colleagues, and loved ones of Sgt. Eric Mueller.”
“We are praying for the two other injured officers to make a speedy recovery.”
