TV features editor Emily Longeretta and TV editor Michael Schneider dissected the female actor categories for the upcoming Screen Actors Guild awards in the most recent episode of Variety’s Awards Circuit, presented by HBO.
The Variety editors highlighted that humour was a genre that could go in any way. Although Jenna Ortega has not yet received an award for “Wednesday,” the two point out that “there’s a possibility” that SAG will do so before the Emmys and present Ortega with a significant honour. In the running for the award are Christina Applegate (“Dead to Me”), Rachel Brosnahan (“The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”), and Jean Smart (“Hacks”).
With Jennifer Coolidge (“The White Lotus”), Elizabeth Debicki (“The Crown”), Julia Garner (“Ozark”), Laura Linney (“Ozark”), and Zendaya (“Euphoria”), TV drama is also shaping up to be a stacked race. According to Schneider, Julia Garner wins “pretty much every award that she’s nominated for.” Yet, Longeretta continued, “so do Zendaya and Jennifer Coolidge.” In contrast to other award events, the SAG does not have a supporting actor category, so Zendaya and Coolidge, as well as Garner and Linney, are competing.
The television movie or limited series category is where Amanda Seyfried, who has consistently won for her work in “The Dropout,” is expected to triumph, but she faces stiff competition from Emily Blunt (“The English”), Jessica Chastain (“George and Tammy”), Julia Garner (“Inventing Anna”), and Niecy Nash Betts (“Dahmer”). Longeretta remarked, “Emily Blunt sneaked in there with ‘The English’.” “I never would rule Emily Blunt out.”
The Fairmont Century Plaza will host the 29th annual SAG Awards on February 26.
