Four individuals have been formally accused by Russia in connection with a deadly assault on a concert venue in Moscow, resulting in at least 137 fatalities.
The suspects, identified as Dalerdzhon Mirzoyev, Saidakrami Murodali Rachabalizoda, Shamsidin Fariduni, and Muhammadsobir Fayzov, were presented in court under heavy security, showing signs of injuries sustained during their apprehension. The Islamic State group (IS) has claimed responsibility for the attack, which took place at the Crocus City Hall, releasing video footage of the violence.
Despite IS’s claim, Russian officials have insinuated, without substantiating evidence, that Ukraine may have had a role in the incident, a suggestion Ukraine has labeled as “absurd.”
The apprehended men were brought to Moscow’s Basmanny district court, displaying visible injuries, with one suspect being wheeled in due to severe wounds. According to court statements, Mirzoyev, a Tajikistan national, along with Rachabalizoda, admitted their involvement in the attack. All four suspects have been ordered to remain in custody pending trial.
The attack unfolded as gunmen entered the concert venue, firing at attendees and setting the building on fire, leading to a roof collapse. This act of violence has been attributed to IS, specifically a branch known as the Islamic State in Khorasan (IS-K), known for its activities in Afghanistan and parts of Central Asia.
Despite IS’s assertion of responsibility, Russian authorities have pointed fingers at Ukraine, claiming the attackers were apprehended while allegedly attempting to cross into Ukraine, a claim met with skepticism from Ukrainian officials. The incident has reignited discussions about IS’s targeting of Russia, highlighting the group’s historical animosity towards Russian actions in the Middle East and previous IS attacks on Russian soil.
