Police say a bank employee in Louisville, Kentucky opened fire and livestreamed the attack on Instagram, killing four people.
The victims’ ages ranged from 40 to 64 years old. Among the nine others injured was a recently graduated police officer who joined the force two weeks ago.
The officer sustained a head injury and remains in critical condition following cerebral surgery.
The police arrived within three minutes and shot the perpetrator to death during an exchange of gunfire.
The incident occurred around 08:30 local time at the Old National Bank in the city centre (12:30 GMT).
Witness Caleb Goodlett told the local press that his wife, a bank employee, had confined herself in the vault when the attack began.
Other witnesses described seeing the exchange of gunfire between police officers and the lone assailant.
Andy Beshear, the governor of Kentucky, stated that a personal friend had been killed in the attack. “This is terrible. A very dear friend of mine did not make it today “Mr. Beshear stated emotionally during a news conference.
He added that another acquaintance was injured and that he hoped he would survive.

Thomas Elliot, 63 years old
William Tutt, 64
Joshua Barrick, 40
Julianna Farmer, 45
Jim Ryan, chief executive officer of the Old National Bank, stated that the safety of employees and customers was “of the utmost importance” and that bank officials were “keeping all those affected by this calamity in our thoughts and prayers.”
Nickolas Wilt, 26, was identified as the officer who was struck in the head while serving with the Louisville Metro Police Department.
