An airstrike attributed to Israel has leveled the Iranian consulate in Damascus, Syria, resulting in casualties and injuries, according to Syrian officials. The operation, which took place in the capital’s Mezzeh district, adjacent to the Iranian embassy, resulted in the death of Brigadier General Mohammad Reza Zahedi, a prominent figure within the Revolutionary Guards, as reported by Iranian state media.
The attack occurred in the late afternoon, with Syrian authorities indicating that Israeli aircraft launched missiles from the direction of the occupied Golan Heights. While Syrian air defenses managed to intercept some of these missiles, others reached their target, completely demolishing the building and affecting all those inside.
Efforts are currently underway to retrieve bodies and attend to the wounded from the debris, though specific details regarding the identities of the casualties have not been disclosed.
Iranian state television confirmed the death of Brigadier General Zahedi, highlighting his significant role within the Revolutionary Guards’ Quds Force and his involvement in operations across Syria and Lebanon from 2008 to 2016. The attack also claimed the lives of several diplomats.
Photographs from the scene depict the aftermath of the airstrike, with the neighboring Iranian embassy seemingly unscathed. Reports from the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, based on sources within Syria, indicate that the strike resulted in eight fatalities, including a high-ranking Quds Force leader, two Iranian advisers, and five Revolutionary Guards members.
Israel, known for conducting numerous operations against Iranian-affiliated sites in Syria over recent years, typically refrains from commenting on such reports.
