It only makes sense that Barbie tries her hand at being a movie star after having a very diverse career as an astronaut, chef, paramedic, skateboarder, teacher, beekeeper, and mermaid.
One of the most anticipated movies of the summer is a live-action, star-studded production about the most well-known doll in the world.
The movie, which was first announced in 2017, has gone through multiple cast changes and release dates, but it is now scheduled to open in July.
This week, a teaser trailer was published, which simultaneously made people feel queasy in a candy store and inspired a flood of clever jokes.
This is all the information you require about the movie.
Who stars in Barbie?
A list of the actors who don’t appear in Barbie could be more efficient.
Ryan Gosling and Margot Robbie may play the lead parts of Barbie and Ken, but there is a minor issue: There are many Barbies in the world of dolls, not just one.
Due to this, the movie also features music artist Dua Lipa as Barbie the mermaid, Bridgerton’s Nicola Coughlan as Barbie the diplomat, and Ana Cruz Kayne as Barbie (Supreme Court Justice Barbie).
Issa Rae from Insecure will portray a Barbie who is president, while Emma Mackey from Sex Education will play a Barbie who has won the Nobel Prize in physics.
Ncuti Gatwa from Doctor Who will portray a Ken who plays the guitar, and Scott Evans from One Life to Live will play a Ken who wears a cowboy hat.
Notable celebrities include Tick, Tick… Bang! star Alexandra Shipp, Saturday Night Live’s Kate McKinnon, and British actor Kingsley Ben-Adir (another Ken) (yet another Barbie, this time an author).
Barbie’s best friend Midge is portrayed by Emerald Fennell from The Crown, and Ken’s friend Allan is played by Michael Cera from Juno.
America Ferrera of Ugly Betty, Will Ferrell of Elf, Jamie Demetriou of Stath Lets Flats, and Connor Swindells of Sex Education will all play human characters.
The narrator will be performed by Dame Helen Mirren because, well, why not?
Who directs the film?
This complex confection will be portrayed on cinema by Oscar-nominated director Greta Gerwig.
The Lady Bird filmmaker, 39, is best recognised for her work on the Saoirse Ronan, Laurie Metcalf, and Timothée Chalamet-starring movie, for which she received an Oscar nod for best director.
She also served as the director of the 2019 version of Little Women, reuniting with Ronan, Chalamet, Emma Watson, Florence Pugh, and Laura Dern. She received another Oscar nomination as a result of it, this time for adapted screenplay.
But, Gerwig is also an actress, and she has had roles in movies including White Noise, 20th Century Women, and Frances Ha.
She co-wrote the narrative for Barbie with her filmmaking partner Noah Baumbach, who also directed the latter.
Can I view some of the movie’s images?
Oh, yes. But now would be a good moment to stop reading if you suffer from rhodophobia, which is a fear of the colour pink.
Why is the trailer so popular online?
There are some humorous memes on social media as a result of the sheer number of stars engaged in the movie and the character posters that have been issued for each of them.Warner Bros., a movie studio, anticipated the chaos by creating a website that allowed fans to add themselves to the posters in time for the release of the trailer.
Evidently, that wasn’t its intended use. Twitter users, on the other hand, have begun speculating about other improbable characters that might show up in the Barbie Cinematic Universe.
Our favourites include Gwyneth Paltrow during her ski trial, Shiv and Kendall from Succession, and Danny Dyer. Or how about Ted Lasso’s cast?
You might like Andrew Garfield’s The Social Network character, though. If not, there’s always Lady Gaga, Ariana Grande, or 12 of Cate Blanchett’s most well-known roles.
Cillian Murphy in Oppenheimer, which makes reference to the fact that Christopher Nolan’s highly awaited picture about the creation of the nuclear bomb being released on the same day as Barbie, is arguably one of the cleverest posters for cinema buffs.
We’re open to a double-bill screening when the two movies are out, despite the fact that they are aimed at quite different audiences.
Why did it take so long for the movie to be released?
There are multiple causes, including Covid and various cast and creative team changes (completely typical in the film industry).
Originally set to play the title doll was comedian Amy Schumer, who withdrew in 2017 owing to scheduling issues.
At the time, Schumer stated, “I’m disappointed, but I’m looking forward to seeing Barbie on the big screen.
The part ultimately went to Margot Robbie, who was revealed as the movie’s star and producer in early 2019. Anne Hathaway was apparently in talks to take over.
Alethea Jones was originally slated to direct the film, but after reports that Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins may take the helm, Greta Gerwig was chosen in July 2021.
Production was also held down by lockdowns in 2020 and 2021.
Who said anything, Margot Robbie?

Who said anything, Margot Robbie?
In a statement released when she was cast, Robbie said: “I’m so honoured to take on this role that I believe will have a tremendously positive impact on children”.
She added that the movie would promote “confidence, curiosity and communication” and that she “couldn’t imagine better partners” than Warner Brothers and Mattel, who created Barbie.
Her words suggest the film will show Barbie in a positive, diverse and inspirational light.
Robbie is the Oscar-nominated star of I, Tonya, Bombshell, Suicide Squad and The Wolf of Wall Street. But she will be hoping Barbie performs better than two of her more recent films which disappointed at the box office – Babylon and Amsterdam.
When is it released?
The movie, a collaboration between Warner Bros. and Mattel, the company that makes Barbies, is scheduled for release on July 21.
A parody of the classic science-fiction epic 2001: A Space Odyssey launched the teaser for the movie, which was released in December.
Barbie appeared in the animated productions of The Nutcracker, Rapunzel, and Swan Lake before Mattel, which was founded in 1959.
But the most high-profile and financially successful Barbie live-action adaption to date is probably the most recent one.
