Sen. Richard Blumenthal, a Democrat, fractured his femur at a University of Connecticut men’s basketball championship parade and will have “simple surgery” on Sunday.
According to a tweet from Connecticut’s senior senator, the fracture occurred during the team’s parade on Saturday to celebrate their NCAA title victory the previous week.
Following a fellow parade goer’s trip and fall on him during today’s procession, Blumenthal stated, “I did absolutely fracture my femur.” Tomorrow’s scheduled procedure is to ensure that everything recovers correctly. I anticipate complete recovery!”
Sen. Chris Murphy, a fellow Connecticut Democrat who attended the parade and tweeted that his colleague “FINISHED THE PARADE” after fracturing his femur, received a response from Blumenthal. Murphy remarked, “Most Dick Blumenthal thing ever.”
In November, 77-year-old Blumenthal was elected to a third term in the Senate. He had previously been Connecticut’s attorney general for five times before being first elected in 2010.
On April 17, the Senate is expected to reconvene. With the Democratic Caucus’ slim 51-49 majority in the chamber, any absence could have an impact on significant votes. Sen. John Fetterman, a Democrat, recently received treatment for depression at a hospital and was recently released. He plans to return when the Senate reconvenes.
