The plan of First Lady Jill Biden to invite the Iowa women’s basketball team to the White House has been scrapped.
The First Lady’s press secretary tweeted that Vice President Biden “looks forward” to welcome the LSU women’s basketball team to the White House after they defeated the Hawkeyes 102-85 in the NCAA championship game on Sunday.
“The First Lady enjoyed watching the NCAA women’s basketball championship game with young student athletes and admires the progress women have made in sports since the passage of Title IX,” said press secretary Vanessa Valdivia. “Her remarks in Colorado were meant to honour both the historic game and all female athletes. She anticipates celebrating the LSU Tigers’ title victory at the White House.”
Biden’s idea to invite both Iowa and LSU, despite the Hawkeyes’ loss, sparked a criticism, which prompted this remark. Biden was present in Dallas on Sunday, when LSU won.
“I am confident that the champions will visit the White House, as they always do. Hence, we hope LSU will attend “After the championship game, Biden stated. “But, I’m going to tell Joe that I believe Iowa should also attend because they performed so well.”
Jill Biden insulted both LSU and Iowa with her White House invitation idea.
Traditionally, championship teams are invited to the White House. Biden’s suggestion to invite both teams would have departed from this tradition, which stretches back to the 1800s.
Angel Reese, who had 15 points and 10 rebounds in the championship game and was voted the Final Four’s Most Outstanding Player, tweeted “A JOKE” when she heard what Biden had said.
The Golden State Warriors were the final team to visit the White House, after defeating the Boston Celtics in the NBA Finals in January. The Celtics were not invited to the White House to join the Warriors.
