Biden continued, “This goes in stages, and I’ve been through these negotiations before,” before a reporter interjected, “
They initiated…back up, okay?” Biden told the journalist.
“It occurs in phases, and the first meetings were not particularly progressive. The second ones were, and the third one was,” explained Biden. “And then what transpires is…The carriers report back to the principals with their current thoughts. Then individuals submit new claims.”
Before adjourning the press conference, Biden stated, “I still believe we’ll be able to avoid a default and we’ll reach a reasonable agreement.”
The statement comes as the White House continues to urge Republicans and Democrats to engage in bipartisan debt ceiling negotiations. Biden has recommended that the debt ceiling be raised as soon as feasible, whereas Republicans are withholding their support unless certain spending cuts are implemented.
