Police report that a total of $20 million worth of gold and other valuable items were stolen after being unloaded from an aircraft at Toronto Pearson International Airport.
Monday’s theft occurred, according to Peel Regional Police, when a “high-value container” was stolen from a holding cargo facility after being removed from an aeroplane that landed at the airport.
“An aeroplane landed at this airport in the early evening. “As per standard procedure, the aircraft was unloaded and cargo was transferred to a holding cargo facility,” Inspector Stephen Duivesteyn stated when announcing the larceny.
After the cargo was secured in the storage facility, “illegal means” were used to remove it, according to Duivesteyn. The container contained $20 million worth of gold and other “high-value items.”
VERY RARE HEIST AT PEARSON AIRPORT
The missing merchandise was reported to the police shortly thereafter. The police refused to disclose which airline shipped the cargo or where the aircraft originated.
“This is extremely uncommon,” Duivesteyn said, adding that it is too early to tell if the larceny was committed by a professional.
Additionally, police stated that they have no idea where the gold is or if it is still in the country. The police believe that this is an isolated incident.
“Our objective is to solve this larceny,” said Duivesteyn. “We desire a resolution… There should be no cause for concern among the travelling public. We do not consider this a matter of public safety.”
No arrests have been made and no suspect information has been released.
“After three days, our investigators are keeping all options open,” Duivesteyn stated.
Greater Toronto Airport Authority issued a concise statement stating, “Because this is an ongoing police investigation, we are unable to comment at this time.”
