A man has been charged with second-degree murder in the United States for allegedly shooting and killing a 20-year-old woman whose vehicle drove up his driveway by accident.
On Saturday, Kaylin Gillis was in the state of New York with three other individuals.
According to investigators, they drove into Kevin Monahan’s driveway in Hebron by accident.
Mr. Monahan, 65, allegedly opened fire on the vehicle as the driver was exiting, striking Ms. Gillis.
Washington County Sheriff Jeffrey Murphy told a news conference, “This is a very sad case involving young adults who were looking for a friend’s house and ended up at this man’s house, where he decided to come out with a firearm and discharge it.”
The area is rural, and the nighttime illumination of the driveways is inadequate. Mr. Murphy stated that none of the group had departed the vehicle or attempted to enter Mr. Monahan’s residence before he allegedly opened fire.
Sheriff Murphy stated, “There is clearly no threat from anyone in the vehicle.” “Mr. Monahan has no reason to feel threatened.”
Ms. Gillis was pronounced dead by paramedics after her companions left the residence and attempted to summon assistance in a nearby town.
Mr. Monahan was “uncooperative with the investigation and refused to leave his residence to speak with police,” according to a news release from the sheriff’s office.
A GoFundMe page was created to assist Ms. Gillis’s family “with funeral and other expenses”
Separately, a Missouri resident has been charged with shooting a teen who accidentally rang the wrong doorbell while picking up his younger siblings.
